MAP READING

MAP is a representation, usually on a flat surface, as of the features of an area of the earth or a portion of the heavens, showing them in their respective forms, sizes, and relationships according to some convention of representation

Map reading (also sometimes written as map-reading) is the act of interpreting or understanding the geographic information portrayed on a map. By map reading, the reader should be able to develop a mental map of the real-world information by processing the symbolized information shown on the map.

Map interpretation is the process of looking at a map and figuring out what the symbols represent and using them to answer some question you had about the Earth, such as what the best path to your destination or where something is that you are looking for.
